3-D: Another Try

Nov 26, 2012 08:38

Yours truly faking painting.

Note the beverage of the gods.

3D models As I may have mentioned, I was slightly disappointed by the resolution of the 3-D printed figures I ordered. Their surface was visibly rough and small details were not very crisp.

Well, it turns our I should have read the small print first. Selecting the correct printing material does matter. Being the cheap git that I am, I had ordered everything in the cheapest plastic available. Later I found out that the surface detail (or rather lack thereof) my figures had was a feature of the material, not the printer itself. I should have gone one step up and ordered the stuff in "high detail" plastic (which is almost twice as expensive).

I thought about ordering another figure in the new material, but the added expense of it and shipping costs meant the experiment was not financially viable.

3D models But lo and behold: Shapeways sent a free shipping offer. Coupled with the few buck I had credit with them anyway, this meant that I could get another figure for a relatively small additional investment. So I went ahead and ordered another air elemental, this time in the higher detail material.

Let's wait and see. It will be interesting to compare these two miniatures.
