Resolutions February: Bugs

Feb 18, 2013 12:42

Yours truly faking painting.

Note the beverage of the gods.

Bugs Not quite millions of then, but 28 nonetheless. This proved to be a tougher challenge than anticipated. Since I had already dug up my Starship Troopers boxes for the Space Komsomol, I decided to do a a bunch of bugs too. I had a pretty good vision what I was about to do with them, I was going to reuse my old Tyranid paint scheme -- partly because that would tie the bugs with the 'nids, creating a giant space bug army, but also because I knew how to paint this scheme pretty darn fast.

I took a little bit of a head start, snipping 28 bugs off the sprues and starting cleaning the parts in late January. The amount is purely by chance, I actually have 60 of them split into two boxes. Apparently I took the box with slightly fewer bugs...

I spent 14 days working on the bugs (and preciously little else). Out of that time, seven days were spent simply cleaning the parts. Actual assembly and priming took a day and then six days painting. Luckily these don't need any basing.

Bugs Thus we can see that life would be about twice as easy for people who do not care about mould lines. That said, I am also slightly disappointed with the quality of these figures. As this picture proves, the parts fit of the lower body halves is just atrocious. These really should be puttied etc. but I just couldn't find it in me to justify the extra work for these essentially quick and dirty bulk troops.

This was a tough one. I painted almost nothing else and still nearly ran out of time (as I'm missing a week of painting time due to other commitments). Goes to show that you really should not underestimate the assembly time with multi-part plastic kits.

Ok, I have the figures for March resolutions selected. This time I'm going old school. Let's see how much faster that is.

P.S. I wore a breathing mask when I glued the bugs. It really works to keep the fume-induced headaches away.
