Resolutions September: Union Agenda

Sep 23, 2013 09:37

Yours truly faking painting.

Note the beverage of the gods.

Union Troopers Well, I made it. Actually with a little time to spare. I'm not very happy with the work I did, but at least they are done now. I must say I'm not a huge fan of the Perry style, especially in plastic. It's too flimsy for me, even though this time I managed to paint them all without breaking anything. Time will tell how they fare in gaming use.

Most of the other resolutions -batches have been pretty simple dip jobs. Unfortunately in my experience blue is not a good color for dipping, so these were a bit more complex to do. No single aspect was overwhelming, but it all adds up. The batch was larger than the minimum requirement. They were multipart plastics and took considerable time to assemble. Painting required a few more stages than normally. And I discovered I absolutely hate painting straps in contrasting colors... I also find that I'm just not good enough to really paint the Perry faces. These were bulk troops with not a whole lot of attention to details, but quite frankly I couldn't have painted better faces on them even if I wanted to. They're just a tad too small and the detail is tad too shallow for my skills. I feel I can get much better results with, say, Mark Copplestone's figures.

Union Troopers I probably should get some rebs to complement these, but the ACW units I'm actually most interested in are the zouaves. It's just that based on this experience, I'm not so sure getting the Perry box is the right cure for that ailment. But if I get anything else, they will be a poor match for the Union... argh!

The real downside of all this is that I really haven't been able to do much else this month. Next month I'm taking a simpler resolutions batch. Or maybe something that might have actual use in an ongoing project? But do I have the shield transfers for that, hmmm...
