January: 100-0

Yours truly faking painting.

Note the beverage of the gods.

The Syem Mercenaries I didn't plan it, honest! I was a bit amazed myself when I calculated the final figures for January. 100 figures painted and zero bought (terrain not included in either figure).

As you may recall, part of my New Year's Resolution was not to buy more figures than I paint. Starting from scratch, I wouldn't buy any in January, then in February only buy at most as many as I painted in January and so on, accumulating the "painting credit" and spending it on purchases.

How did it go? Well, I managed to hold onto the resolution and even though the act itself was pretty easy (largely due to lack of funds), some problems quickly became evident. I had to give a pass to quite a few juicy January sales, but in the long run that was probably just good.

However, one glaring oversight started chafing instantly. The January numbers were partly boosted by painting my 15mm Slammers infantry. That's all fine and dandy under the "everything counts as one" maxim. Except those were pretty much my only 15mm figures in the painting queue and gathering enough painting credit to purchase more to continue the project is going to be an uphill battle.

Hammer's Slammers Tanks And I can just forget about my planned 6mm project this year... any new projects in smaller scales are just not going to happen this year.

Another problem point is Kickstarters. Taking this strictly, I'll also have to avoid any KS projects that come with a pile of figures.

And I have to admit, I had an order ready just waiting for me to click "buy" then February 1st rolled around... Prosperity rebels, here I come!

Even though the setup was a bit lacking in planning, I think this was a good idea overall. It did stop me making impulse buys that were going to just sit on the overloaded shelves. Maybe a general cooling off period would be better idea: list the figures you want but you're not allowed to actually order them until two weeks later or something. If you still want them at that point, maybe it wasn't just a passing fancy.

All this painting also means I'll have to buy some more storage boxes...
