Resolutions March: Ferach Ride Again

Mar 21, 2014 09:16

Yours truly faking painting.

Note the beverage of the gods.

Deadloque Elf Cavalry Whew, it's finally done. This is probably the closest I've ever cut it with a resolutions batch, but I managed to do it. Only ten days left and I haven't even really managed to paint anything else either (except for Mr. K and Mr. L).

I sort of wish I had had the time to do these properly, as they are really nice figures with lots of detail. While not quite a dipjob, these were rushed to some degree because I was very conscious of the looming deadline.

The funny thing is that I'm not quite sure if these are even real Flintloque figures. Before launching Flintloque, Alternative Armies did some Napoleonic -inspired elves. Crystal Elves, maybe? These may be from that line instead, especially the general who is wee bit over-armored for nappies.

I dug up some painting references both from my bookshelf and from the net, but because I have lost the original packaging many moons ago and I'm certainly not an expert on Napoleonic cavalry uniforms, I was left a bit guessing.

Deadloque Elf Cavalry I figured these must be cuirassiers and lancers, plus the oddball general. The cuirassiers were pretty close to the reference material I could find and they were relatively straight forward to paint.

The lancers, on the other hand, did not match my reference material. There was supposed to be a colored chest panel on the tunic but instead I got loads of cordage. Maybe it's based on another style of uniform I couldn't find references to... in any case I had to improvise a bit. I think they look pretty cool even if I have no clue how authentic this is.

I also dropped some distinguishing marks from the officers and the trumpeters. With units this small I felt that having almost every figure different I would lose the coherent unit feel. It's a bit different when you have two or three command figures in a block of 20 ot 30 figures...

Nappies are certainly growing on me. I love the flashy cavalry uniforms. It's just the thought of painting zillions of them for any reasonable game that scares me... and I do not paint for display, period.

Deadloque Elf Cavalry Ok, next up is the ferach infantry. This is really two sets, one is the original infantry (actually they are mostly dismounted cavalry, something you see very rarely in historical figure lines) from Lady Wintermore's Fangs and the rest is probably a bunch of Crystal Elf command blisters actually... I know they don't have musket between them. There's three identical command sets with officers and maybe sergeants with half-pikes?

I think I'll start with the Wintermore set. More on that next month.

But what will I do now to salvage my monthly output figures? Argh!

P.S. Yes, I know the real French actually tried to give units uniform horses. I just thought that was boring and painted them a little bit varied anyway. Call it battlefield replacements.
