Resolutions January: Bloody Bones

Jan 12, 2015 09:33

Yours truly faking painting.

Note the beverage of the gods.

Bloodbone Axemen Research? What's that? After finishing these puppies I have 32 Bloodbone axemen (axdwarfs?) with hand painted shields and a nagging feeling that this is nothing like the official Bloodbone symbol.

Well, that would have been too good to be true.

And it wouldn't even matter all that much, except I do have a leader figure for them and a few other Bloodbone characters -- and their shields do have cast on symbols.

Personally, I think these actually fit the rules of heraldry better than the official abstract fang symbol. It's a bone on a field of blood (red). The rules of heraldry may seem obtuse to many, but it's really mostly about being clearly recognizable and describable. We are talking about an era with basically no cheap image media -- you need to be able to describe it in a few words so that anyone coming across it immediately recognizes it. A red cross on a field of white. A white tree on a field of black.

The basics are actually pretty simple. It gets confusing when lords of several domains try to stuff it all into one design and also when you try to distinguish between overly popular symbols such as lions.

Bloodbone Axemen They should have just let the first guy with the lion have it and think of something original instead... and someone just needs to accept being Mr. Pink.

For some reason back then I never really liked these bareheaded dwarf figures but now that I painted them I'm actually quite fond of them. Maybe it was related to not being comfortable painting the faces.

Admittedly, their anatomy is a bit orcish, especially with how the head is positioned relative to the rest of the body, but the face is actually very easy to paint. It's just that little bit larger and better defined than your average Perry figure that even I can actually paint the features and not just dab abstract blobs of color on it.

I'm actually getting a bit stoked about these dwarfs. I really should save the next batch for February, but I'm not sure if I'm able to... well, let's see after I finish the Warzone Imperials on my desk right now.

In other news, I've been watching Yamato 2199. That must be the best remake I've ever seen (not a reboot, which is different thing). That thing is fabulous, and they have meshed the computer generated parts in perfectly. If you are not familiar with the limitations of hand drawn animation, you have a hard time telling where one ends and the other begins.

Loot Maybe I should now actually paint the Mecha Colle kits I hoarded last year... they're too large for Full Thrust really, though. What to use them with?

P.S. Ok, so I caved in and ordered about 150 HYW soldiers from Black Tree's sale... now what am I going to do with those then...
