Black Powder: First Impressions

Yours truly faking painting.

Note the beverage of the gods.

The nice mailman brought my copy of Black Powder yesterday and I managed to skim through it.

The general attitude of the rules is very much to my liking. Didn't really get into the rules mechanics since my main concern with the rules was their space and figure requirements.

Well, they are on the large side. But maybe not quite impossibly so. Most of the example scenarios seem to run on 200-300 figures per side. Building up my existing 150 figure armies to this level is not completely impossible, though I do understand that starting from scratch would certainly be intimidating to say the least.

The relaxed attitude towards basing schemes was also quite refreshing. Though I don't base my figures on a 15mm frontage or really even 20mm I think I can get a reasonable amount of 25mm based figures on suitable movement bases. And since combat resolution seems to be unit vs. unit anyway instead of figure vs. figure, it doesn't really matter gamewise how many figures you can squeeze into the frontage.

I'm thinking scenic sabot bases... I've got a few samples coming in from Warbases ( http://www.warbases.co.uk/ ) Let's see how that works out.

Thumbs up!

P.S. Hail Caesar, which I'm actually more interested in, is still in the mail.
