Just got my War and Conquest from the nice folks at North Star. The freebie figure is nice, I really need to build a command stand around this.

I'm still reading through it, but the first impression is that it's a nice old school rules set very much in the Warhammer vein. To put it bluntly, it's very much what WAB could have been if they had had the balls to ditch the stuff rooted in the fantasy origins of the system, e.g. what's the point of having a Toughness value in the profile when basically everyone has T3 anyway?

I don't mean this in any bad way. WAC seems to be an improvement just like Fantasy Rules! initially was basically HotT done right in sensible language.

WAC also seems to play with similar sized armies, so no clear distinction there either. I'll probably need to play a couple of test games to see which one I like better.

WAC has good online support. I'm a bit undecided about this. While it's nice to get the army lists and stuff fast and for free, I'm also old enough to appreciate real books (preferably with nice color pictures of miniatures). And it's not even about the printing. I just already have tons of loose printed pages lying and flying about and it's just not the same as a real book. All the real books I've bought are still in nice condition and can be found if needed. All the files I've downloaded, even the ones I paid real money for, well... some were lost in disk crashes, some I just can't locate. And their printouts invariably end up in recycling.

I also got Clash of Empires, but haven't really read it yet. This also seems to be a figure-based rule system.

Oh, I almost forgot I own Tactica, the bendy-spear edition (not sure if there are any others). Never played it, though. The only thing I liked about Tactica was how it handled skirmishers.

(And truth be told, I do have DBA and DBM hidden away somewhere. But the less said about the better...)
