15mm Basing

Introduction

They're actually pretty nice. Being substantially larger than 15mm humans they also have a lot more detail. I like to base my 15mm infantry on Flames of War bases. And since I only use 15mm in vehicle-heavy genres, I'm not doing a whole lot of neat ranks. This generates a problem -- how to apply basing material to the middle of the base?

I don't do a whole lot of 15mm so I'm pretty inexperienced with multi-basing. My initial method was to break everything into stages, first glue down the figures, then apply basing material and so on.

But this makes it hard to reach the middle of the base between the figures and increases the risk of messing the figures with the basing compound. Maybe I should break this down even further?

Here's what I came up with:

The Process

2014-12-09 Step 1: Separate the figures by type. With typical 15mm ranges, you should have scads of duplicates.
2014-12-09 Step 2: Assign the figures to bases, but do not glue them down yet.
2014-12-09 Step 3: Glue in one row of figures. Leave the others out for now.
2014-12-09 Step 4: Mark the position for the remaining figures, but do not glue them down yet.
2014-12-09 Step 5: Spread basing compound in the space between the figures, then glue the remaining ones.
2014-12-09 Step 6: Finish the basing.

The Results

I did not time this so I'm not sure if it's actually faster, but it definitely felt safer and I was more confident doing the basing. With a little practice I think this will actually turn out faster.

One thing you have to consider though is the drying time for your basing compound. As the second row has to be glued in while the compound is still wet, your drying time determines how large batches you can effectively work with.
