RopeCon 1998 Pictures
I ran three different demo games at
RopeCon. Unfortunately,
Tube asked me to take pictures
of the Warhammer 40,000
big game, so I also ran out of film during my last demo...
If you came here directly, you probably missed the link to
the con report.
Generic Con pictures
The dreaded he-vampire.
The guest of honor was Ray "Don't quit your day job" Greer from
Hero Games.
Generic Legions is a nice, fast and free science fiction game from
Armoursoft. I used my collection of old Citadel, Renegade Legion and
Silent Death figures in addition to really funky old Heroics & Ros
robot figures and Adler Napoleonics.
I personally think the puffs of smoke add a lot of feeling to the game
compared to just removing destroyed units.

Surf Napoleon Must Die! in progress.
Can't see me, I'm behind the house!
The figures are an odd collection of old Space Marine plastics, some converted, and Renegade Legion plastics, plus a few others.
It was a four-way battle.Worked surprisingly well, actually.
Watch them burn... he he he...
Smoking wrecks are SO much more satisfying than just removing casualties.
More wrecks.
Alf tanks don't seem to be using catalyctic converters...
If I move this...

Closeup on Earthie tanks.

Napoleon advances.
Hmmm... if I just happen to leave this ruler on the table here...
Thing blow up in GL, which I find a jolly good thing.
The vapid amount of dice rolling, OTOH, is not so good.
The obligatory crotch shot.
Jarmo and Hulk, two people who were able to stomach my games for unbelievably long.
Napoleon is moving out.
Isn't this aluminum suitcase cool? It's in almost every picture.
The downside of seeing everyone is that everyone sees you...
Air power does not tend to live too long in Generic Legions.
Out of focus...
Neat formation. But for how long?
Fantasy Rules is simply the best fantasy mass battle system I've yet to
see -- and I collect these things. The games had a vague
"Night of the Living Lead" theme, pitting
- Feuding Feudals, a human feudal army
- Evil Conquerors for a Better Tomorrow, an evil chaos army
- Lord Helmet of the Undead, back by popular demand
against each other. Notice the humans' allies, the dreaded Moomin Attack
Squad, which attracted a fair bit of attention among casual viewers
and passers-by. Next year, I have to think of something even more
eye-catching...
As for the lack of focus in some of the pictures, I claim the time-honored
defense of blaming my tools. The autofocus is even more near-sighted than
I am...
Moomin attack squad in action. The Moomins never failed to attract a crowd.
Important for convention games: Always have something eyecatching.
Looks like Feuding Feudals vs. Lord Helmet's Undead.

Closeup of the action.
Opening stages. Lord Soth is butting heads with some knights.
The undead dino advances.
Looks like Feudals are up against Evil Conquerors For A Better Tomorrow.
The end is nigh...
The dreaded 'wristshot'.
Some semblance of lines maintained.
Red Redemption holes up in the village.
Initial lines.
The are in line... so far.
Undead vs. Chaos, it seems.
Can't we all just live in peace?
The chaos knights are from a Battle Masters set, and definitely up to something.

The red guy is a Ral Partha Rögon the Balrog Dragon. I kinda like him.
Warhammer 40,000 big game
Though I wonder if they really managed to have a sensible game
on a table so cluttered, I must applaud the dedication and
storage space of these guys. Scratch-built 25mm titans, for
heaven's sake!
I can't say if they were actually able to play, but it looks impressive.
Tube asked me to take these pictures.
Scratch-built ork gargant.
Hey! There's an empty spot on the table. Oh wait, he's going for reinforcements.
Reaver titan, I believe.
Warhound looks bigger than the Reaver? Perils of scratch-building, I guess.
Sky Galleons of Mars
Sky Galleons of Mars is a sadly underappreciated game. Ok, yes I also
think the rules are clunky and the original figures look like they
came out of a cereal box, but the idea must appeal to anyone who
grew up reading Barsoom novels.
Is that 3.99 inches or 4.01?
I organized this game for RoPeCon as a sort of last minute thing.
